Issues with zimbardos research(Stanford prison experiment)
1)lacks mundane realism
2)zimbardo ignored the role of dispositional (behaviour traits that remain the same) factors
Did the participants in zimbardos research act genuinely or stereotypical?
Stereotypical- rather than genuinely conforming to the8r social roles, their ‘performances’ were based on stereotypes of how guards/prisoners should act!
How did zimbardo ignore dispositional factors
He didn’t take into account the personality factors of the guards.
instead he influenced behaviour.
Strength of Zimbardo’s research?
1)High internal validaty
The strength of Zimbardos SPE
The Stanford prison experiment had high internal validity
Internal Validity Meaning?
No other factors are influencing the results.
How does Zimbardos research have high internal validaty?
Assigned the participants roles Randomly(without knowing personalities)
So if the prisoners/guards behaviour change, it must be due to the pressure of the situation.
