Q

What are the evaluations of social support ?

A

Strength: Support from the real world
Albrecht - looked at a programme which targeted pregnant teens to help them resist the pressure to smoke. It was found that when a girl was given a buddy to help support them they were more likely to resist social influence

Strength: Research support for dissenting peers
Gamson - participants were told to produce evidence to support an oil campaign. They found higher levels of disobedience because the participants were put in groups to discuss their thoughts on this task. This shows how social support can lead to disobedience by undermining the legitimacy of authority.

Q

What are the evaluative points of LOC ?

A

Strength: Research support
Holland looked at the link between resistance to obedience and a higher internal LOC. He repeated Milgram’s baseline study and measured whether [participants were internals or externals. Found 37% of internals didn’t continue to the highest shock levels. Whereas 23% of externals didn’t continue to the highest shock levels.

Limitation = Contradictory research
Twenge = Analysed data from American LOC studies over a 40-year period. Found that people became more resistant but also more external. This therefore doesn’t link Rotter’s idea that internals are more resistant to social influence. This therefore may not be valid.
