What is alpha bias?
When differences between genders are exaggurated.
What is beta bias?
When differences between genders are minimised.
What does androcentric mean?
Only focuses on/ studies males.
What does gynocentric mean?
Only focuses on/ studies females.
If results in a study only apply to one gender how does it affect the study?
-Is an unrepresentative sample so ungeneralisable to the opposite gender.
How does Milgram’s study and variations show gender bias?
-Milgram’s original study only testes 40 men( androcentric sample).
-Variation 8 only focuses on 40 women (gynocentric sample).
How does Sherif’s study show gender bias?
-Shows beta bias.
-Only tested 11 young boys and tried to explain everyone’s behaviour.
-Androcentric sample.
How does Cohrs study not show gender bias?
-Had a very representitive sample from both men and women.
How could Cohrs’ study show gender bias?
In study 1 more females were tested than men so more responses will represent women’s behaviour.
What is ethnocentrism?
Assuming results from one culture apply to all cultures.
What is eurocentraism?
Only studying those of European decent.
What does etic mean?
Something which is universal and does not change from culture to culture.
What does emic mean?
Something which changes from culture to culture.
What is an imposed etic?
A cultural bias which happens when a researcher assumes that an emic construct is actually etic.
What is a cultural norm?
Traditions and gestures which changes meaning from culture to culture.
