Behavior is learned through imitation
Role Theory
People are aware of the social roles they are expected to fill and behavior can be attributed to adopting these roles
Attitudes
Include cognitions, beliefs, feelings, predispositions, often expressed as opinions, likes/dislikes, affitinities/aversions
Consistency Theories
People have a preference with consistency and will change attitudes/behaviors to align
Fritz Heider’s Balance Theory
A consistency theory. Has to do with balance among three things. Balance is harmonious imbalanace is stressful
Leon Festinger’s cognitive dissonance theory
A consistency theory. The conflict you feel when your attitudes and behaviors don’t align.
Free choice dissonance
Dissonance that comes from choosing among many options
Forced compliance dissonance
When one is forced to behave in a way inconsistent with beliefs
Spreading of Alternatives
When one likes what they choose more and dislikes what they didn’t choose more
