What is social psychology?
a branch of psychology that focuses on how people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are influenced by the presence and actions of others.
Why do people obey?
social pressures and influences in the environment, including fear
We obey because of some characteristic of our personality
Different powers of obedience
Coercive power means the power to punish.
Legitimate power refers to the power granted by some authority, such as the power a police officer has.
Reward power is the power to reward.
Expert power results from experience or education.
referent power refers to admiration or respect
Conformity
Conformity is the act or behaviour of a person that matches that of a certain group of people. It is adapting one’s own beliefs, attitudes, and even feelings to match or imitate the views and beliefs of the people belonging to the group.
types of conformity
Compliance: a change in behaviour without a change in opinion
internalisation: a change in behaviour and opinion. (true conformity)
identification: adopting the group’s views because value group membership. often temporary.
