What is the tripartite system?
A system wich divided schools into grammar, secondary modern and technical schools based on the 11+ exams.
What was the goal of the 1944 Education Act?
To make education free and available to all children to age 15, and to sort them into different schools based on ability
What were grammar schools?
Schools for academically able students, focused on subjects like English and math.
What were secondary modern schools?
Schools for students with practical or hands on skills, less academic.
What was the tripartite system criticised?
It was seen as unfair, gave more support to grammar schools, and judged children too early with the 11+ exams.
What did the 1988 education reform act introduced?

What is a national curriculum?
A set of subjects and content which all schools must teach.
What are league tables in education?
Ranking of schools based on student performance, mainly exam results.
What are academies?
Schools set up to replace failing ones, run by sponsors with more freedom from local councils.
What is the educational maintenance allowance?
Money gives to poorer students aged 16-19 to help them stay in school or collage
What changes did the conservative coalition make in education?
More academies, free schools, tougher exams, curriculum changes and pupil premium.
What is the pupil premium?
Extra funding given to schools for each student from a low income background.
What were the key educational policies of the NEW LABOUR?
