social networks Flashcards
What did you understand from this postdoc?
dual group memberships can be signaled socially
heritage identity & national identity membership
But are they Identified as such?
Self-report and censor data on who’s friends with whom
And use these insights to inform a software programme that measures people’s views on ethnicity and social networks of others
my previous research (overlap)
I was interested in the role of contextual factors
on ….
these included classroom variables but also teacher:
multicultural education on peer relationships and motivation to learn.
The theoretical basis of my studies was self-determination theory and contact theory.
–> the role of acknowledging and normalizing identities & cultural elements of minority students in their social and structural integration within the classroom
Ways to improve intergroup relationships and create bridges
Similarly, you want to look at how symbolizing and acknowledging a dual identity affects social relationships within educational contexts
How is it interdisciplinary?
looking at educational practices on group processes and motivation
(so educational sciences & social psych)
understand the role of social factors such as SES, and integration/immigration policies
(so sociology)
So i was combining insights from different disciplines
How do you deal with stressful situations?
combining finishing PhD + a new teaching job was quite stressful
I divided my days to not divide my attention
set strict deadlines and kept them
–> external motivation (arranging a vacation)
in general:
I have people that I see as my mentors, and I talk to them about the best course of action to take
Try to not divide my attention too much with too many tasks
make sure to do sports
Difficult moment collaborating?
People don’t always respect the deadlines, they are busy or they forget..
I make sure to have more than 1 thing going on so i can continue working on the other thing
send regular reminders, to not leave things to chance
My role in this project
the delineated tasks
a supervising role for the PhD (like a daily supervisor) but also be supervised by you
(i have multiple students I am supervising, and i teach)
Project management:
everything is delivered on time
The quality of the deliverables meets the standards
Communicating the research findings on a regular basis -perhaps through some small symposia -
get relevant exposure - e.g., about the software program
public engagement and outreach
Papers I have sent
to showcase what I know about networks in general
we can use some of the social network metrics as DV’s in regression models
since we are focusing on colleges, we may need to take the nested of the data into account - using multilevel models
methodological skills
I have interest in learning different complex quantitative analytical tools
- I have done a lot of different complex analyses during my PhD, so I have the capacity to learn them
- I always did it myself but I got some methodological input from collaborators
but also qualitative analyses:
discourse analysis, grounded theory, thematic analysis, interview techniques, using the transcription and analysis tools
research history
research master’s psychology at UvA
got interested in diversity & inclusion because
–> international student myself: rules & norms not very apparent
–> in the middle of the integration debate
What do the Dutch do to accommodate integration?
Educational contexts are where it starts
Wrote a PhD project about it
Got awarded an NWO grant
I first explored the interdependent relationships through a network model
and further tested the emerged hypotheses through directed models
I am currently looking into other organizations & institutions
e.g., ethnic profiling and procedural justice of the Amsterdam police
e.g., the status of diversity and inclusion needs in humanitarian organizations –> because it is interesting for my own work as a self-standing trainer,
I work with humanitarian NGOs
Strengths
- I think I have very good communication and social skills. People find me quite approachable and friendly, which helps me build rapport and form networks
- I am also good at managing my time and meeting deadlines, also multitasking
weaknesses
- take on a lot of different projects
I find a lot of things interesting, but then I find it hard to turn off work - so maybe saying no or setting boundaries - work-life balance :) - I overprepare for things,
which I think stems from finding public speaking a little intimidating
Why this postdoc?
1- I really like the research group ERCOMER
- because the topics we focus on are complex, therefore it requires a holistic approach
- using robust research methods that can accommodate the complexity of the problem
- I can learn new methods, but also can bring new ones that would fit the vision of the research programme
2- I like the topics you focus on
- diversity is not an exception but a norm
- but we still see a lot of segregation and friction
- I am interested in understanding factors that drive and mitigate this division between people
- Because the need to belong and feel like you have -meaningful connections is a basic psychological need for humans
3- this particular project
- I will learn to visualize and study the interpersonal relationships I was researching about
- Friendships in particular have the potential in improving attitudes
- I find mixed methods studies a little more complete in providing meaningful insights
-I was developing my own research line to apply for a grant: I am interested in seeing the interplay between different domains of acculturation - and this project already focuses on some aspects of this project i was working on
their papers
Design architecture, nudging —> making things easier for the respondents, to get more accurate and complete results, keeping responder motivation
I also really liked the triangulation used in Zsofia’s paper, because of course, people may report on the more immediate friends or encounters based on what’s more salient at the moment, but rather more brief encounters also have an effect, which can be seen through the sensors, GPS data
Low network density - if people forget to put a tie —> why not the default all ties present and people take out ties if they are not present?
my questions
Do you want to further develop the social network software GENSI or want to develop a new one?
How do you envision the ERC team working together?
Will I be supervising the PhDs? There seem to be no teaching duties right?
What are some Project management tasks?
How often do people come to the office? After corona
When will I hear from you?
We can we do on the side?
we can combine social and psychometric network insights
we can build for instance psychometric networks using social network metrics as variables that vary across individuals (for instance their in and outbound connections), the frequency of contact with outgroup members, their general attitudes towards outgroup and so on
