Social Network Analysis Flashcards
What is the meaning of Adaption Mechanism?
Nodes become homogenous as a result of experiencing and adapting to similar environment- i.e. ties promote similar behavior (socialisation of practices, attitudes, etc.
What is the binding mechanism?
Social ties can bind nodes together insuch a way as to construct a new entity whose properties are different from those of its constituent elements
What is the exclusion mechanism?
one node, by forming a relation withanother, may exclude a third node
What are the 3 different measures of centrality?
– Degree centrality: The number of ties that a node has. Indirected networks in-degree (number of ties directed to the node) and out-degree centrality (number of ties that the node directs to others)– First, second, third …. order centrality
– Closeness centrality: The reciprocal of farness, which is the sum of a node’s distances from all other nodes
– Betweenness centrality: The number of times a node acts as a bridge along the shortest path between two other nodes
What is a bridge?
A node whose ties fill a structural hole, providing the only link between two individual clusters. Famiglia De Medici example
What is power in SNA?
It’s the degree of independence from other nodes
What does the strenght of ties mean?
It refers to the intensity of the relationship between nodes
What is density?
Number of lines observed/Maximum value possibile
What is density?
Number of lines observed/Maximum value possibile
What are cliques?
Identifiable subgroups of nodes
