Social Learning Theory Ao1 Flashcards
What is social learning theory
Suggest we learn by imitating a model, observing their behaviour, motivated by the hopes of gaining some kind of reward
Vicarious reinforcement
If we see a person being punished for their behviour we are less likley to imitate the behavior
If we see a person being rewarded for their behaviour we are moe likely to imitate the behaviour
Indirect- what you see
Four key mediation processes
Attention - observer must be watching and paying attention of behaviour being modelled
Retention - behaviour must be remembered
Reproduction - observer has to be physically and mentally able to reproduce behaviour
Motivation - observer must want ti imitate the behaviour
Identification
People more likely to imitate behaviour of those with whom they identify with (same age, gender, status, or higher status)
Bandura’s study aim
Demonstrate children could learn aggressive behaviour through observation of an aggressive model
Also examine if the sex of the model could influence thus imitation
Banduras study procedure/ method
72 children, half watched an adult play aggressively with the bobo doll, other half watched adult play non-aggressively
Banduras study findings
When given their own doll the children who had seen an adult play aggressively where muc more aggressive towards the doll
Banduras study conclusion
Children are likely to imitate acts of violence if they observe these in an adult role model
