Social Learning Theory - AO1 Flashcards
Give one assumption of the Social Learning Theory
SLT suggests learning is through observing a model and imitating a model
Define Identification
An individual associates themselves with a role model de to similarity or status and wants to be like the role model, therefore a person is more likely to imitate the behaviour of these models
Define Imitation
When an individual observes a behaviour from a role model and copies it
Define vicarious reinforcement
If a person sees a role model rewarded for a particular behaviour then it increases the chance that the observer will imitate behaviours to receive the same reward.
Define vicarious punishment
If a person sees a role model punished for a particular behaviour it reduces the chance the observer will imitate behaviour so they can avoid the same punishment
What does ARRM stand for?
A- Attention
R- Retention
R- Reproduction
M- Motivation
When do the 4 mediational processes occur?
Between stimulus and response
‘Explain Attention and give an example
Learning occurs when they attend to a model’s behaviour e.g children must observe what the model is doing or saying in order to reproduce the model’s behaviour
Explain Retention and give an example
- need to store the memory of the behaviour in LTM
- needs to be memorable and easy to store
Explain reproduction
Individuals must have the skills and capabilities to be confident they could reproduce the model’s behaviour, again this is more likely if the behaviour is easy to replicate
Explain Motivation
An individual may be motivated to imitate the behaviour because they have seen someone else rewarded for the behaviour
