social learning theory Flashcards
steps
role models = we look up to them
identification = we acknowledge we want to be like them
observation = we pay attention to their behaviour and actions
Vicarious reinforcement = our role model gets rewarded or punished for their behaviour - we want the same rewards
imitation = we copy their actions and behaviour
Direct reinforcement = we get rewarded or punished for our behaviour - likely to be repeated and behaviour is strengthen
Internalisation = no need for continual reinforcement as behaviour becomes an integral part of an individuals personality
What does internalisation lead to ?
learn to engage in criminal behaviour regardless of consequences
Define nature VS nurture
Nature = physical features inherited through parents gene, behaviour/ personality also inherited
Part of our behaviour can attribute to evolution
Nurture = behaviour and personality characteristics developed through experiences and interactions with our environment and people around us
State 2 criticisms of the theory - never chase
1) focuses on role of nurture, ignoring role of nature in explaining criminal behaviour. Some psychologist suggest there is a criminal gene = tendency to commit crime. Without this gene = people cannot learn to become criminals
2) The theory does not explain how criminal behaviour starts in the first place, even if we accept that each generation of criminals learnt from the previous generation of criminals, there has to have been a point where criminal behaviour started. The SLT does not tell us about the origins of criminal behaviour
State 2 criticisms of the theory - red rabbits
3) The theory does not take into account, people who turn to crime even when they have not been exposed to criminal role models. Evidence suggests that people from law-abiding families with good upbringing who unexpecting commit crimes could be better explained through nature - brain differences
4) If SLT is correct then it should be easier to reduce crime. If criminal behaviour is strengthen through reinforcement, then it should be reduced through harsher punishments and seeing others punished. However people continue to commit crimes despite negative consequences or re-offend.
Learnt cannot be unlearnt
