social learning theory Flashcards
when was SLT created/discovered and by who?
proposed by bandura in 1972
what is the social learning theory
it takes the principles of behaviourism and refines it to include the mechanisms of how people ( particularly children) learn from others
how does reinforcement play a role in SLT
The child observes a specific behaviour from a role model e.g. an aggressive parent
The child sees that the aggressive parent is rewarded e.g. power over the other parent
The aggressive parent experiences positive reinforcement e.g. they got what they wanted
The child internalises what they have just seen e.g. ‘I want to feel like that’
Vicarious reinforcement has taken place e.g. the child has observed the reward gained by the aggressive parent and thus is motivated to behave similarly to gain such a reward for themselves
This aspect of SLT is what separates it from behaviourism as it involves a degree of cognition
what is meant by vicarious learning?
learning through watching someone else and their consequences.
what are the meditational processes?
attention= a person pays attention to behaviour
retention= memorise behaviour they have observed
motoreproduction= can they replicate the behaviour themselves
motivation= given a reason, they may perform the behaviour
what did bandura do?
he agreed with the behaviourist learning theories
recorded the behaviour of young children who watched an adult behave in an aggressive way towards a bobo doll
what were the conclusions of his Bobo experiment? (1961)
the children who watched the adults attack the bobo doll ended up copying them more than the kids who had seen the adults be non aggressive
what was Banduras experiment in 1963?
showed videos to children where an adult behaved aggressively towards the bobo doll. One group saw the adult praised for being aggressive. A second saw the adults be punished for their aggression. The third group saw it without any consequence
what was the result of the 1963 experiment
the children who saw the adults get praised were much more aggressive to the bobo doll than the rest, followed by the third group then the second.
