Social learning theory Flashcards
SLT Assumptions
•Behaviour is learned from experience
•Learned through observation and imitation of others.
Bandura-Viacrious reinforcement
Children age 3-6. One group observed adult demonstrating physical and verbal aggression to the Bobo doll. The other group watched an adult play non-aggressively to the Bobo doll.
Findings- Children exposed to the aggressive model were more likely to be aggressive (imitation)
Boys were more likely to mimic an aggressive male model (identification).
Define vicarious reinforcement
Reinforcement that is not directly experienced but occurs through observing someone being reinforced for a behaviour.
Define modelling
individuals we observe and imitate
Define identification
we are more likely to imitate models with similar characteristics such as gender and age or people perceived to be attractive or high status.
Mediation Process
Attention- extent to which we notice certain behaviours
Retention- how well the behaviour is remembered
Motor reproduction- the ability of the observer to perform the behaviour
Motivation- the will to perform behaviour, which is often determined by whether the behaviour was rewarded or punished
A03- EVAL
•Research support-> Bobo doll. controlled environment
•Lacks Ecological validity-> lab may not translate to real world
•Less reductionist than behaviourists.
