Imitation
When an individual copies the behaviour that they have observed a role model performing
Identification
When the observer respects the role model and aspires to be like them or sees themselves as similar to the role model
Increases the motivation to imitate the role model
Modelling

Vicarious reinforcement
When an individual observes a role model being rewarded for a behaviour
The motivated to imitate this behaviour in the hope of receiving a similar rewarding consequence

Reduces the motivation to imitimate a behaviour

Motivation
Attention
Observer has to concentrate on the models behaviour if it is to be imitated
Retention
How well the behaviour is remembered - must be remembered if going to be imitated
Reproduction
The ability of the observer to perform the behaviour they have observed
Motivation
The will to perform the behaviour which is often determined by whether the behaviour is rewarded or punished
Banduras research
Recorded the behaviour of young children who watched adults behaved in an aggressive way towards a bobo doll
Adult hit the doll with a hammer and shouted to abuse it
Children observed by one way mirror imitating those specific aggressive acts
Children who weren’t exposed to an aggressive role model didn’t display vicarious learning
