What was the Tuskegee Experiment?
Went from 1932-1972. Used 600 Black men from Tuskegee Alabama and examined the effects of untreated syphilis. 7 died and 154 more from complications.
What was the Guatemalan Experiment?
1300 deliberately infected and 83 died.
What are some aspects of the nature of counseling?
It mirror sociopolitical influences of society
Does not exist in a vacuum
Historically neglects marginalized groups
As a result people of color underutilize and prematurely terminate counseling therapy
What should be included in curriculums for counselors?
A conscious raising component.
An experiential component
A knowledge component
A skills component
What are the principles of social justice?
equity

participation

What is equity?
the fair distribution of resources, rights and responsibilities to all members of society
What is access?
the ability of all people to access the resources, services, power, info, and understanding crucial to realizing a standard that allows for self-determination and human development.
What is participation?
the right of every person in society to partake in and be consulted on decision that impact their lives as well as the lives of other people in their contexts and systems.
What is harmony?
wherein the actions revolving around the self interests of any individual or group ultimately produces results that afford the best possible outcome.
What must counselors do to remain credible?
remain nonjudgmental when faced with behaviors that could typically be taken out of context. Avoid personalizing. resolve challenges to your credibility.
What are the two components of credibility?
expertness and trustworthiness
What is expertness?
Reputation, specialized training, behavioral evidence of proficiency/competency.
What is trustworthiness?
based on the perception of the client. Sincerity, openness, honesty and perceived lack of motivation for personal gain. self disclosure.
What is attractiveness?
How similar the client believes the counselor is to them
What are the 2 dimensions of a persons worldview?
Locus of control
