What is social justice?
The fair division of resources, opportunities and privileges in society
What are human rights?
The basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person from birth until death
Can human rights be taken away?
No
Can human rights be restricted?
Yes
Why might human rights be restricted?
If someone breaks the law or in interest of national security
Do we have the right to voice our opinions?
Yes
What do we have a responsibility to do in regard to others opinions?
Listen to and respect them
Are everybody’s rights the same?
Yes, but they are not always respected
When was the universal declaration of human rights made?
In 1948
Why was the universal declaration of human rights made?
WW2 made protection of human rights an international priority because so many basic human needs were disrespected
Who made the universal declaration of human rights?
The United Nations (UN) allowed more than 50 members to contribute
How is social justice being observed in Hinduism?
In India there is a conscious move away from the caste system which has created a gulf between the rich and poor
How does Islam contribute to social justice?
One of Islam’s five pillars is ‘zokat’ and charity has been historically part of the Islamic faith
How is social justice observed by Judaism?
The concepts of ‘simcha’ (gladness), ‘tzedakah’ (the religious obligation to provide charity) and ‘tikkin dorm’ (healing of the world) are central to Judaism
How is social justice observed in Christianity?
God requires his followers to show charity and kindness to all of his creation

What does prejudice mean?
To form an unfavourable opinion of a group without knowing them
What is discrimination?
Making a distinction against a person based on their group, class or category not because of their individual merit
Is discrimination sometimes lawful?
Yes
When is discrimination lawful?
When people are paid different wages based in their skills or job
When is discrimination unlawful?
When people are treated differently because of their gender, marriage, pregnancy, disability, the way they are inclined, race, colour, ethnic background, nationality, opinions and age
What is positive discrimination?
Favouring another group above one group (it’s illegal)
What is a stereotype?
An image of a group that ignores individual differences
What is prejudice?
A negative opinion about a group that isn’t based on facts
What is an assumption?
A conclusion made from limited knowledge without proof
