Environmental costs
Where a business damages the environment
Non renewable resources
Many businesses use them and when they run out there is no getting more
Harmful to people’s health
Businesses make products that can cause harm to people e.g tobacco which the government has to pay for treatment
Ethical questions
Exploiting cheap labour or animal testing
Taxes on products
Help pay for things like schools and hospitals
Jobs
Provide millions of jobs for people
Essential services
E.g transport and electricity
Product can help people
E.g medicines, safer cars or holidays
Pay fair trade
Cost more to produce products but it helps people earn a decent wage
Product development
Use non toxic materials, focus on safety, not tested on animals
Change their product and packaging
Make it more environmentally friendly and energy efficient and reduce its carbon footprint
More sustainable
Renewable energy resources and recycling more things
Why do it?
Gives the company a competitive advantage. A ‘green’ or ‘socially responsible’ image can attract new customers and increase sales
Why not?
You have to pay more for the product to be made with fair trade and new ways of making things
Pressure groups
They campaign to companies that they think are causing the most damage and raise awareness which damages their image and sales and profits which will harm the company
