social influence zimbardo's research (findings) Flashcards
how did the simulation start
It was a slow start to the stimulation however the guards soon took up their roles with enthusiasm
how did the guards behaviour changed throughout the simulation
The guards behaviour became a threat to the prisoners’ psychological and physical health.
when did the the study end
the study stopped after 6 days due to the guards behviour towards the prisoners
the study was intended for 14 days
what happened on the 2nd day
within 2 days, the prisoners rebelled against the harsh treatment by the guards
the prisoners ripped their uniforms, shouted and swore at the guards who retaliated with fire extinguishers
how did the guards behaviour changed during the study
- the guards employed “divide and rule” tactics by playing the prisoners off against each other
- harassed prisoners constantly to remind them they were being monitored all the time e.g.they conducted frequent headcounts, sometimes in the middle of the night
guards highlighted the difference in social roles by creating plenty of opportunities to enforce the rules and punish even the smallest misdemeanors
how did the prisoners behaviour changed during the course of the study
After the rebellion was put down, prisoners became:
- subdued - one prisoner went on a hunger strike. The guards attempted to force - feed him and then punish him by putting him in “ the hole” ( a tiny dark closet). Rather than regarding him as a hero the other prisoners shunned him
- depressed
- anxious
One prisoner was released on the first day because he showed symptoms of psychological disturbance
why did the prisoners and guards behavior change throughout the simulation
the guards and the prisoner identified more and more closely with their role.
the prsioners’ became more and subdued and the guard’s became more aggressive, with some appearing to enjoy the the power they had over the prisoner’s
