Social influence and social change Flashcards
Outline the steps in how minority influence creates social change by linkning it to the African-American civil rights movement of the 1950’s and 60’s
1- drawing attention, civil rights marches drew attention to the situation of segregation by providing social proof of the problem
2- consistency, civil rights marches provided consistency of message and intent
3- deeper processing of the issue, ppl began to think of the unjustness of the status quo
4- the augmentation principle, many ppl risked their lives
5- The snowball effect, the press for changes caught the Us governments attention which provided a change from minority to majority support for civil rights
6- social cryptomnesia (ppl have a memory that change has accured but do not know or remember how that happened)
