Social Influence Flashcards
What are the 3 types of conformity
- Internalisation
- Identification
- complicance
Internalisation
A deep form of conformity whereby the individual accepts the majority view as they see it as true and changes behaviour both publicly and privately.
Identification
Moderate form of conformity whereby someone may conform on the basis that they may value something within the group although not necessarily agreeing with everything
Compliance
‘Simply going along with others’ in public despite holding a different view in private. Particular behaviour or opinion stops as soon as group pressure stops
Who proposed the two process theory as to why people conform?
Deutsch & Gerald (1955)
Explanation for conformity
- Informational social influence (ISI)
* normative social influence (NSI)
Normative social influence
“The need to be liked”
-Agreeing with majority opinion out of fear of rejection, and need for social approval and acceptance
(May lead to compliance)
Informational social influence
“The need to be right”
-A cognitive process whereby individuals follow the behaviour of the group because you feel as if they are likely to be right
(may lead to internalisation)
Definition of nAffiliators
Somebody who seeks social approval/needs everybody to like them
+EVALUATION
Research support for ISI:
Lucas et al (2006)- students given easy and difficult maths questions. Greater conformity to incorrect answers when the questions where difficult.
~study shows conformity is higher when people don’t know the answer themselves supporting the theory behind ISI~
+EVALUATION
Research support for NSI:
Asch found that participants went along with evidently wrong answers because other people did
-EVALUATION:
Individual differences in NSI:
Research shows that NSI does not affect everyone’s behaviour the same way. For example nAffiliators are more likely to conform.
-EVALUATION
Individual differences of ISI:
ISI does not affect everyone’s behaviour the same. Asch found students confirmed less than other participants.
-EVALUATION
ISI and NSI working together:
Two process model suggests it’s either one or the other but often both processes are involved
+EVALUATION
Real world application:
Hotel staff started to change behaviour of guests by using printed messages to encourage them to save energy. Rooms that suggested other guests were using fewer bath towels were most successful
