Social inequality and structural discrimination Flashcards
Social inequality definition:
This is a concept that is measurable, and implies that social outcomes are not equal between groups.
Social inequity definition:
These are morally and ethically formed arguments that highlight social injustices.
Inequality in Australia (3):
- Economic inequality (income, wealth, employment outcomes).
- Health inequality (life-expectancy, child mortality, prevalence of chronic diseases)
- Social inequality (educational attainment, personal safety).
Reflection point… this lecture has data for income inequality, and a report link to closing the gap.
…
Intersectionality, marginalisation and social inequality (2):
- People who experience multiple forms of marginalisation regularly experience social inequality in multiple aspects of their life.
- Inequality from one part of their life can carry into another and compound over time.
e.g. Indigenous people with a disability: prenatal, early childhood, schooling, youth, justice, health and aging…
… an undiagnosed disability can be perceived as bad behaviour during school; can be expelled; this increases the likelihood of encountering police, etc.
