When people decide which group they belong to
What is social identification
When the individual adopt the identity of the group. Behave in accordance of group norms and values of group
What is social comparison
Perceiving your in-group as better than the out-group, in order to maintain self esteem which can lead to prejudice against the out group
What is a strength of the theory
There is research evidence, the Tajfel minimal group studies showed that boys preferred in-group even when there was no competition. Supports personal identity is associated to social identity
Name a strength of the theory
There are practical applications. The theory has been used to explain prejudice. Suggests a reason for events e.g. football teams discrimination.
