Stigma as a barrier to accessing treatment

A
  • Stereotyping of people with a mental disorder, such as beliefs that they are dangerous or unpredictable can lead sufferers and their families to avoid seeking treatment for fear of being associated with that stereotype.
  • Person may also avoid seeking treatment for fear of being perceived as weak.
