What are daily hassles?
Day to day irritations that are usually short lived. However, they may linger if they go unresolved. An accumulation of these daily hassles can cause our stress levels to increase. This can have a negative effect on our health.
What are daily hassles?
Day to day positive experiences that are usually short lived. These uplifts can neutralise the effect of the daily hassles. They give us a break from the negative effects of the hassles and can give us the energy to cope with them.
What did Kanner et Al do? (1981)
Hassles and Uplifts Scale (HUPS) participants completed it once a month for 9 months.
Used this scale to demonstrate a link between hassles and stress inducing illness.
Longitudinal design with 100 participants aged between 45-64.
Used measures of mental health status and emotional responses.
What were the findings for Kanner et Al (1981)?
Negative correlation between number of hassles and psychological well being.
Hassles were a better prediction of well being than uplifts were.
Daily hassles were a better prediction of well being than life events
