What was the traditional legal structure of Russian class?
-based on four groups
-nobles, merchants, clergy + peasantry
What was happening to these groupings?
-challenged by emergence of small by influential middle stratum that expanded as pace of econ change quickened
Where was there social mobility?
-new business + professional men able carve out comfortable lives
-nobles’ sons chose to join business work or peasants rose through hard work to join ranks of middle management
How did this group grow?
-grew as a force as management + professional positions became more demanded
-plenty opportunities for enterprising in Rus with development of infrastructure
What else fuelled a growing middle class?
-growing of education
-demand for more administrators
What was the new industrial society?
-Rus industrialising society required specialists + professional training
-by 1914 growing numbers of ‘new positions’ like managers, pharmacists + civil engineers
What happened to the number of certain professions?
-number doctors increased from 17k to 28k 1897-1914
-number graduate teachers doubled 1906-14
