emigration
-750,000 Norwegians emigrated to the US (largely from farming areas)
-economic growth could not keep pace with population growth and many left

-essentially no aristocracy or upper class as industrialisation was late and ha not created the bourgeois class and the 1821 abolition of nobility did away with titles

-divorce was very rare and only available if granted by the king
