what is social cognition?
the area of social psychology that focuses on how people think and act in the social world
schema
a mental model of any of the various things we come across in our daily lives
ex: the dogs you see will bark
heuristics
mental shortcuts to help us categorize information
representative heuristics
judging the likelihood of whether or not something belongs within a category. ex: thinking someone is an athlete because they are muscular
availability heuristic
evaluate the likelihood of an event based on how easily instances of it come to mind. ex: k first letter, k third letter?
thin-slice judgments
detailed predictions based on small amounts of information
planning fallacy
tendency to underestimate how much time it will take to complete a task
affective forecasting
predictions of one’s future feelings
impact bias
tendency to overestimate intensity of future feelings
durability bias
tendency to overestimate the duration of positive and negative effects
hot cognition
mental processes influenced by desires and feelings. ex: getting a bad grade and having your reasoning be influenced by anger at yourself
directional goals
motivated to reach a particular outcome without processing information objectively
motivated skepticism
being skeptical of evidence that goes against what we believe
need for closure
desire to come to a firm conclusion
mood-congruent theory
tendency to recall memories based on current mood
