SOCIAL CLASS + SOCIAL MOBILITY Flashcards
what is social mobility?
movement of individuals up or down the social scale
what are the two types of mobility
intergenerational mobility
intragenerational mobility
explain intergenerational mobility
mobility between generations for example man whose father was a coal miner but ended up becoming a doctor upward mobility
explain intragenerational mobility.
movement between classes by an individual during their working life for example woman starts off as a secretary and ends up running the company by the end of her career
what’s an open and closed society
tells us if there’s a great deal of social mobility
What are the problems of researching social mobility
- classifying occupation = people shouldn’t be classified by occupation
- Studying the mobility of women = doesn’t focus on it that much
- mobility of very rich and poor = top positions closed off and acquired through inheritance the poorest have no occupation
- cant conclude the social mobility of people until they are well-established in their careers late 40s/50s
what’s one of the biggest social mobility studies in the UK called
Goldthrope the Oxford Mobility Study
explain the goldthrope study
1972
- 10,000 men
- used the hope - Goldthorpe scale to compare the occupational classes of sons and their fathers
what were the findings of the Goldthorpe study?
chances increased for younger generations who had grown up since ww2
1:2:4 rule = whatever chances WC boy had of reaching service class, an intermediate boy had twice the chance and a boy starting off with service class had 4 times the chance
