  • M/c usually use the elaborated code which are longer, more grammatically complex sentences.
  • Leading to w/c feeling less at home at school as the language used in textbooks is elaborated code, therefore they’re de-motivated.

Criticisms of Cultural Deprivation as an explanation

A
  1. Blackstone and Mortimore - W/c parents attend fewer parents evenings because they work longer hours, they may want to help but don’t have the knowledge to do so.
  2. Marxists - would say that compensatory education acts as a smoke screen, concealing the social inequalities like poverty which is the reason for underachievement.
