What is the definition of ‘Social Class’?
A division of groups due to economic and status within society.
In education, whats the difference between ‘Attainment’ and ‘Achievement’?
Attainment refers to working for and completing a goal or specific target. Achievement however, is the concept of improving, say over a period of time.
Why are Middle class children seen as more likely to succeed in education?
Middle class children usually have better access to materials within schools, better tutors and even private education.
How do schools try to create a fairer environment in schools, for materially deprived children?
Schools are trying to reduce material deprivation by having after school clubs for children to complete homework and have access to the needed equipment; also free school meals.
What, according to Archer, do working-class children do to create self-worth in schools?
Working-class children are seen to be turning to their appearances to supposedly achieve status,, big brands such as Nike, are common fashion statements. Known as ‘Nike identities’.
What negatives are there for having Middle class habitus in schools?
Middle class children in schools are able to get better support and education due to sharing the same norms and values. As working class do not share these same views they are often ignored and seen as ‘inferior’ to the middle class pupils.
Why dont many working class children choose to attend secondary education?
Working class children have been given the impression and beliefs that university and other higher educations are ‘not for the likes of us’ and doesn’t suit their desired lifestyle. Also, university can be a very expensive choice and often puts off working class children as a fear of deb, therefore a risky option.
