Don’t think twice policy

A

The Bakufu decided to expell all foreigners without thinking twice.
This edict began in 1825 on the advice of a government offical names Takahashi. He studied the western countries and felt that Japan should be even more restrictive about the westerners.

The Dutch east India company was a company that many small companies combined into to form the Dutch east India company in
1602. This was the only group that Japan traded with, allowing them access to Deshima Island, Nagasaki. The Japanese began to learn the west because of the contact with the Dutch.

Why USA wanted formal relationship with Japan

A

The US wanted relationships with Japan, because Japan was on the trading route To China and the Americans wanted to set up a coal station at one of Japan’s ports so they could get fuel for their steamships. They also wanted japan to help US shipwrecked sailors on the Japanese shore.
