Social Change Flashcards
Social change;
Occurs when society adopts new belief that later accepted as norm.
Drawing attention to an issue:
Minority can bring about social change by drawing attention of majority.
Cognitive conflict:
Minority challenges majority’s cognition so they think deeply about issue being challenged.
Consistency of position:
Moscovici research showed that minority’s expressing a consistent argument have more influence over the majority.
Augmentation principle:
Minority is willing to suffer for own views so taken seriously by majority.
Snowball effect:
Gradually over time their influence converts minority to majority.
Social change occurs:
At this stage social crypto-amnesia may exist whereby society knows change has occurred but forgets origin of it.
