Social Area Bocchiaro Flashcards
How was the sample selected?
Self selective by flyers being placed in the campus cafeteria, they were offered €7 or course credit for taking part
What was the procedure
It began with a Dutch experiment greeting them and telling them about an extremely ethically breaching previous study on sensory deprivation. And then asked the participants to put forward people for it.
The experimenter left for three minutes to give them time for reflection on the action based decisions about to be made.
They were then taken to another room and given a 7 minute task of describing the sensory deprivation task using positive adjectives and not mentioning the negative effects.
They were then taken into a second room and told to either put forward the experiment as breaching the ethical codes explained or support it given the opportunity to to put a form in either box.
After this, participants were given two personality inventories to probe for suspiciousness before being debriefed and consent was taken.
Who were the participants?
149 undergraduates from VU University, 96 women and 53 men, mean age of 20.8 years, 11 were removed because of their suspiciousness
How was obedience measured?
Those who complied with the request were considered obedient
Those who refused were considered ‘disobedient’
Those who reported the experimenter’s questionable conduct to the Research Committee were considered whistleblowers
What were the predicted results?
Very few people said they would be obedient(3.6%) but they thought a small proportion of the average would be(18.8%)
31.9% thought they would be obedient and that 44.9% would be disobedient
Most people said they would be a whistle blower-64.5% and that 37.5% average uni students would be
What were the actual results?
- 5% obedient
- 1% disobedient
- 4% whistle blowers
What were the conclusions?
The main conclusion that Bocchiaro reached is that behaving in a moral manner is challenging for people, even when this reaction appears to(the people in the comparison group)observers as the simplest path to follow
