social and cultural influences Flashcards
max beckman
in this painting she shows that she was influenced by the german expressionist painter max beckman, this is evident in the dreamlike quality and the fascination with memory. beckmans style, and that of other german expressionist painters, also tried to show the emotional state of the characters, in this painting this can be seen in the expressive brushstrokes and distorted stylised faces
john bellany
this painting is influenced by the style of john bellany. he, like cairns, was fascinated by the sea and exploring controversial topics of guilt, sin, and death. again, like cairns, he looked back at his own experiences for this. he also paints eyes in a similar stylised way to emphasise expression
family
in this painting cairns makes reference to events that took place in her own childhood, traumatic events such as her mothers mental illness are being processed in this painting. she has painted herself looking in at this unhappy celebration – no one is looking at each other, this is showing the isolation she felt as a child
war
she has painted the soldier at the front, showing the need to explore her fathers experience during world war two, in this painting we can see that she is reflecting and honouring those who fought for their country just like her father
