Q

How does education affect health?

A

In studies, we can see that the more education a person has, the better paying job he/she is able to obtain. More money means more ability to take care of one’s health. Better paying jobs also usually mean better health insurance which means better access to healthcare. Higher salary also usually means you can afford housing in “healthier” neighborhoods (with sidewalks and trees, etc.) and the ability to buy healthier foods. Better paying jobs can lead to having a personal vehicle, which increase one’s access to lots of places—healthcare, stores, recreational activities.

Q

What is socioeconomic status (SES)?

A

economic and sociological combined total measure of a person’s work experience and of an individual’s or family’s economic and social position relative to others, based on income, education, and occupation

17
Q

How does income affect health?

A

Inequitable distribution of income and wealth may itself cause poor health.

Poor neighborhoods are often dangerous, high crime rates, substandard housing, little recreation, almost no stores selling wholesome food.

People of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to die prematurely than are people of higher socioeconomic status, even when behavior is held as constant as possible.

18
Q

How does the environment affect your health?

A

Where you live
~ type of housing
~ geographic location

Environmental hazards
~pollution
~construction
~noise
~violence/crime
~pesticides
