Social Flashcards
Locus of control: Internal
“I can control outcomes through my own efforts and actions”
Locus of control: external
“Things are outside of my control”
Ex-Learned helplessness
Attribution Error
Over-attribute the behavior of others to internal factors
Ex- They are obese because they are lazy
Social Facilitation Effect
people tend to perform simple, well-learned tasks better when other people are present
Ex- walk faster when there are pedestrians, study more efficiently when in the library
Deindividuation
when people lose their sense of self-awareness and trade their individual identity in exchange for a mob mentality
Bystander effect
less likely to provide help when there are other bystanders. Presence of bystanders diffuses responsibility
Ex- Kitty Genovese case: stabbing of Kitty in NYC; neighbors heard cries for help but did not call police because they assumed someone else had already called the police
Social loafing
. People exert less effort when they are being evaluated as a group than if they are individually accountable
