nation (key term)
an idea that means different things to different people. some think a nation is a country with physical territory and a government. others think a nation is people who share a sense of belonging together and who want to control their own destiny.
country (key term)
a distinct physical territory with a government. countries have official borders that are recognized by other countries.
nation-state (key term)
a country that has physical borders and a single government that makes laws and conducts business on behalf of its citizens. either ethnic nationalism, civic nationalism or both combined. nation state means “country”.
international (key term)
between countries or nation states. nation states would cooperate with each other to promote peace and security, trade, health, human rights and the protection of people or cultures in danger. means between countries or nation states.
patriotism (key term)
the love of a country and an interest in its well being. also a sense of loyalty expressed in various ways.
ethnic (key term)
racial, cultural, or linguistic characteristics.
sovereignty (key term)
the political authority to control ones own affairs.
self-determination (key term)
the power to control ones own affairs.
civic nation (key term)
a nation created by people who share certain political beliefs and values.
constitution (key term)
a legal document that lays out the basic rules on which a society is built.
are nation and identity related?
yes, they are connected. they are connected because nations shape collective identities through shared culture, language, and history and individual identities are influenced by belonging to a nation.
