What is Globalization?
the worlds citizens are becoming connected to and dependent on one another
What is outsourcing?
When a company hires another company from a different country to do part or all of its production (job).
Transnational Corporation
large companies that operate in more than one country because of far-reaching trade networks
Consumer
A person who purchases goods
Infrastructure
system of public works such as building roads, water supplies, bridges, tunnels etc
Media concentration
refers when the ownership of the media is in the hands of a few larger companies. (ex. Canwest owns Global TV)
Media convergence
use of tech to combine media such as newspapers, books, television and internet. (ex. telus started off as a simple phone company then turned to be one of the biggest companies)
Social globalization
process by which people’s lifestyle are spread all over the world and the global networks which influence our actions/words/knowledge etc.
Political Globalization
process by which political decisions are becoming more international
Economic Globalization
the spread of trade, transportation and communication systems around the world
Individual Identity
a persons identity which includes race, gender, ethnicity, age, religious beliefs etc.
collective identity
a group that takes in their interests with another individual creating a group. they express themselves through language, culture, rules, government support etc.
Linguistic identity
view of personal identity and a category of social identity. Captures ability to communicate and participate in a language community
Universalization
spread of cultures, trends etc around the world.
global village
parts of the world being connected through technology
multiculturalism
different cultural or racial groups in a society have equal rights and opportunities
hybridization
refers to when two or more things of different elements of various cultures such as food, fashion, music combine to form a new whole. basically mixing cultures together to form a new one.
homogenization
process by which cultures become more alike
assimilation
culture of a minority group is forced to absorb another culture and their own identity disappears.
Marginalization
when society fails to value the identity or culture of a smaller group
Accomodation
making adjustments for people to allow for differences
Integration
providing equal treatment for participation of different groups in society
acculturation
when people from different cultures come into contact and refer to cultural changes that occur when 2 cultures adapt to each other’s worldview.
