What is conformity?
Type of social influence that describes how a person changes the attitude or behaviour in response to pressure
What are the three types of social influence?
Compliance
Identification
Internalisation
What is compliance?
Shallowest level
Person changes public behaviour, not private beliefs
Short term
Result of normative social influence
Give an example of compliance
Saying you like a certain type of music because many other people like it however privately you hate it
What is identification?
Middle level
Person changes, public behaviour and private beliefs. Only in presence of the group
Short-term change

Deciding to become vegetarian, because your flatmates are vegetarian but when you walk past McDonald’s you get meat

Deepest level
Change in public behaviour and private belief
Long-term
Result of informational social influence

Converting to Christianity, and decided to go to church regularly
