If we say that globalism is proceeding in an uneven way what are we are saying about the pattern of the distribution of wealth and inequality in societies on a global level?

A

Countries and societies that were already rich are benefiting from globalization more than poor countries therefor creating greater inequalities between countries/societies. In all countries the rich are also benefiting more from globalization than the poor therefor creating greater inequality within countries/societies.

Q

Research Question: Do greater levels of democracy lead to greater or less levels of terrorist attacks? What is the Independent Variable? Dependent?

A

Independent Variable: democracy

Dependent Variable: number of terrorist attacks

21
Q

What are the four different types of questions that were talked about in the methods section of this class?

A

Factual (what happen, how many) Comparative (what is the difference between place A and B), Developmental (was there a change over time?), Theoretical (why did it happen)

22
Q

Measures of central tendency

A

mean (the average) and median (the middle number in a set of numbers)

23
Q

Research Question: Is the amount of partying that a college student does effected by the distance that they live from their parents? What is the Independent variable and Dependent variable?

A

IV: distance from parents (miles)

24
Q

If someone says that they are calculating the standard deviation from the mean. What kind of measure are they calculating? (measure of central tendency OR measure of dispersion)

A

Measure of dispersion. The standard deviation measures how much variation there is from the mean. So in a class if the mean grade was 80% and there was a low standard deviation you would know that most people in the class got around an 80%.

25
Q

Correlation (does/does not) equal causation.

A

Correlation does not equal causation.

26
Q

A student researcher is investigating the study habits of students and notices that those students who consume more coffee from the Grind (specifically the library Grind) have a slightly higher GPA than those students who get most of their coffee from other sources. Can this researcher make the conclusion that there is “something in the coffee” at the Grind that is making students smarter? What are the Independent and Dependent Variables?

A

IV:study habits-more specifically the amount of coffee and where they purchased it from.

What is the difference between assimilation and multiculturalism?

A

Both are involved with a minority group being accepted by a majority group. However, in assimilation the minority group adopts the values and norms of the dominant culture.
