snell's law of refraction or calc. the refactive index Flashcards
what measurements were taken during the experiment
the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction
describe how the student found the path of the ray of light passing through the glass block?
with the block on a sheet of paper, trace around the block on the page. with a light ray shining through the block, use a sharp pencil and ruler to trace the block, use a sharp pencil and ruler to trace the entrance and exit ray by drawing dots along the light rays and joining them up with the ruler.
describe, with reference to the diagram, how the student found the angle of refraction
with the traced entrance and exit rays complete, remove the ray box. Connect the entrance and exit rays to show the refracted ray inside the block. draw a normal line at 90 degrees to the surface of the block, and use a protractor to measure the angles of reflection and refraction from the entrance ray to the normal and the refracted ray to the normal
suitable graph for angle of incidence and angle of refraction
sin i vs sin r
use graph to find refractive index
slope=refractive index
explain how the graph verifies snell’s law
a straight line graph through the origin verifies that sin of the angle of incidence is directly proportional to the sin of the angle of refraction
explain how the graph verifies snell’s law
a straight line graph through the origin verifies that sin of the angle of incidence is directly proportional to the sin of the angle of refraction
the student did not record any values of i below 20, why not?
percentage error on small angles is high due to errors reading the protractor and a very small refracted ray angle.
using a graph for refracted index is more accurate than finding the mean. why?
best fit line can show inaccurate readings and errors. the best fit line gives the overall trend of the data. the average of all the results incorrect readings, so the graph is the more accurate method
