Snare Technique Flashcards
1
Q
How do we achieve dynamics on snare?
A
- Closer to rim = piano
- Closer to the center = forte
- Higher stick height = forte
- Lower stick height = piano
2
Q
Why was the traditional grip originally used?
A
It better fit the angle of the sling drum
3
Q
What are likely causes of an uneven drum roll?
A
- both sticks not hitting the same distance from the center of the drum/not striking the same spot
- One stick is being raised higher than the other
- the fulcrum of each stick is at a different place
- One hand is stronger than the other
- the dominant hand is overshadowing the other hand
- more tension in one hand than the other
- the pressure on the sticks is different in each hand
4
Q
What is the logical sequence for teaching a five stroke roll?
A
- Controlled single stroke
- buzz stroke
- controlled 2 bounces per stroke
- LlRrL or RrLlR
5
Q
How do you set up a snare drum?
A
- set the concert snare level
- set the snare strainer directly in front of you
- forearms should be slightly lower than parallel
6
Q
Describe matched grip and why do we teach it?
A
- the balance point should be a third of the way from the butt to the tip
- the fulcrum is made at the balance point by the thumb and forefinger
- matched grip is usually taught first due to the ease of learning
- matched grip is taught because it better matches the concert snare set-up
7
Q
What is the difference between a “buzz” roll and a measured roll?
A
The buzz uses multiple bounces per stroke while the measured roll uses only two bounces per stroke
8
Q
When playing an unmetered roll at a soft dynamic level, will your roll speed be slower or faster?
A
slower
9
Q
What are the advantages to the matched grip for drummers?
A
- Better control for the beginner
- the grip better fits with the stands used for today’s drums
- greater amount of transfer with this grip for other percussion instruments
10
Q
Describe the full stroke
A
- the stroke is straight up and down
- fingers and wrist should be relaxed
- the stroke should be consistent no matter which hand is playing
- The height of the stroke may be adjusted
