Smoking That Fungal Pack Flashcards
Why are fungi important?
They are microbial decomposers that decay plant matter and wood
Freshwater algae cling to plant matter and other underwater surfaces.
What are periphytic algae?
The result of periphytic algae attaching to submerged wood, influencing litter decomp, algal biomass, and fungal growth & reproduction.
What are priming effects?
Any outdoor experimental system examining the natural environment under controlled conditions.
What is a mesocosm?
What 2 main things were used to make the mesocosms?
1) Wire mesh platforms
2) Plexiglass
How did the light and dark mesocosms differ in the setup?
Light mesocosms used clear plexiglass while the dark used opaque plexiglass
What is the difference between alpha and beta diversity?
Alpha - measures richness/raw number
Beta - measures diversity between ecosystems/communities
What are the 2 main purposes of an NMDS plot?
1) To measure diversity/dissimilarities between communities
2) Determine best positioning for samples in dimensional space without using absolute distance
What does stress tell you about an NMDS plot?
How well the ordination summarizes observed distances among samples i.e. how well samples/communities are mapped out
The difference between distance in the reduced dimension and the complete multidimensional space.
What is stress?

What makes class Leotiomycetes so special?
They are ecologically diverse
What study found that 75 species of aquatic hyphomycetes were associated with order Helotiales, class Leotiomycetes?
Baschien et al. 2013
Where are aquatic hyphomycetes commonly found?
Dead leaves in freshwater environments (streams, rivers, etc.)
