Q

How does smoking cause emphysema? (a lung disease)

A

alveoli in lungs stop inflating properly when you breathe due to chemicals in cigarette smoke.
they may also burst due to coughing.
this reduces the amount of oxygen a person can take in, making the person breathless.

Q

How does smoking cause lung (respiratory) infections?

A

Cilia are damaged/harmed/killed by tar.
Dust/smoke particles/mucus build up in lungs.
Bacteria can get into alveoli.
They reproduce and infect the lung.

Q

Explain how ciliated cells keep the lungs clear from dust and mucus.

A

Cilia Movement: Ciliated cells have tiny, hair-like structures called cilia on their surface. These cilia constantly move in a coordinated wave-like motion.

Transporting Mucus: The cilia push mucus, which traps dust, dirt, and microbes, upward toward the throat.

Expelling Mucus: Once the mucus reaches the throat, it is either swallowed or coughed out, removing the trapped particles from the lungs.
