16
Q

How can you diagnose carcinoid tumors?

A

Most are found incidentally at the time of surgery. In carcinoid syndrome, increased 5-HIAA (hydroxyindolacetic acid) or 5-HTP (hydroxytryptophan) in 24 hour urine samples are diagnostic.

17
Q

What is the significant of increased 24 hour urinary 5-HTP in the workup of carcinoid syndrome?

A

Indicates bronchial location of the neoplasm.

18
Q

What is the 5 year survival for carcinoid tumors that underwent palliative resection?

A

25%

19
Q

What is the 5 year survival for carcinoid tumors that underwent curative resection?

A

75%
