Q

Secondary Lymphoid Tissues

A

Where white blood cells migrate to to interact and generate an immune response. Lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and lymphoid tissue.

Q

What stem cell do WBS originate from

A

hemaotpoeitc stems cells in the bone marrow. Red blood cells and platelets also derive from these cells.

Q

Nuetrophils

A

Multi lobed nucleus. The primary WBC of the peripheral blood. Major cellular component of the innate immune system. First responding cells to pathogen.

Q

Eosiophils

A

Bilobed cells with pink cytoplasmic granules. Mediate immunity against parasites. Also involved in hypersensitivity/allergic responses.

Q

Basophils and mast cells

A

Deep blue cytoplasmic granules involved in inflammation. Basophils are in the blood where mast cells are in the tissues. Fc receptors on their surfaces that bind to antibodies. They also have pattern recognition receptors (TLRs) that recognize pathogens. release histamine and other mediators of inflammation.

Q

Dendritic cells

A

Cells with long cytoplasmic projections that reside in the tissues, ingest pathogens, and migrate to secondary lymph tissues to present antigens to lymphocytes.

Q

Lymphoid derived cells

A

Morphologically similar cells with round nuclei and scant cytoplasm. they are larger than RBCs

Q

B cells

A

From bone marrow, dirrecentiate into plasma cells that secrete antibodies in an immune response. (Humoral immunity)

Q

T cells

A

Originate in the bone marrow, but differentiate in the thymus gland. Cell mediate immunity where activated T cells kills virus infected cells, tumor cells, and foreign cells in general. 70% of circulating lymphocytes are T cells.

Q

NK

A

Natural Killer Cells. Components of the innate immune response, mediate killing of infected and tumor cells. Appear similar to T cells, but dont mature in the thymus and have different cells markers. These cells do not have specific antigen receptors.

A

Supporting framework, consists of reticular fibers, small collagen fibers, produced by reticular cells.

A

Langerhans cells in the epidermis of the skin. M cells in the intersitial epithelium overlying lymph nodules, dendritic cells of lymphatic tissues.

Q

Lymph nodules

A

Dense collections of primarily B cells in meshwork with stroma of reticular fibers. Mainly found in the diffuse lymphatic tissue, or in the loose connective tissue of the GI, Resp tract. Nodules are sometimes called follicles.

17
Q

Germinal Center

A

Part of the lymph nodules that consist of dividing B cells. that is lighter staining due to larger cells with more cytoplasm and euchromatin
