Slit Lamp Flashcards
General overview of the eye health.
Diffuse
What is the purpose of Diffuse
General overview of the eye health. Observe extent of corneal scar, abnormalities, infiltration, neovascularization, and corneal edema (indicated by: hazy, grey, granular appearance of cornea).

Diffuse
What is the purpose of Direct - Optic Section
Check for abn. in corneal contour and corneal layers. To assess tear layer and observe depth of foreign bodies/opacities in cornea. Examine the crystalline lens and depth of the anterior chamber & it’s angle.

What is the purpose of Direct-Parallel Piped
Assessing a C/L fit, broad view of posterior and anterior surface of the cornea, general overview of blood vessels, scars and abrasions. Examine the crystalline lens.
Examine the crystalline lens.
Direct-Parallel Piped
What is the purpose of Direct-Conical Beam?
To localize a target on/in the cornea. Observe debris floating in the anterior chamber, and flare on cells in the aqueous.

What is the purpose of Indirect (Proximal)?
Observing the cornea and iris for pathology. Outlining whatever object your looking at (i.e., foreign body).

What is the purpose of Sclerotic Scatter?
To observe corneal clouding (edema). Edema will look patchy, greyish cloudy spot in the pupil area. Deep corneal scars/abn. Assess a C/L fit in situ (only if slit lamp can be decoupled).

What is the purpose of Tangential?
To observe the surface of the iris, floaters in the anterior chamber, and C/L fit if Px is light sensitive. View fleischers ring under cobalt blue with fluorescein.

What is the purpose of Retro-Direct
Observing deposits in Descemet’s membrane and blood vessels that have invaded the cornea. To examine epithelial edma, vacuoles, delicate scars and opacities in the crystalline lens.
