Slit Lamp Flashcards
The science of examination with a slit lamp is called _ as it allows in vivo study of living tissues at high magnification.
Biomircroscopy
The slit lamp has the advantage of the examining the eye in _
3D
Focus oculars with _ and set magnification to _
Focusing rod , low
Focus the slit beam on the eye by moving the _ either towards or away from the patient
Joystick
Adjust chin rest so patients _ lines up with black marker on head rest
Temporal cantus
The _ light is for the basic exam
White
The _ filter is for retinal exam to better show contrast between retinal vessels and RPE. It also used for rose bengal staining of the cornea and conjunctiva
Red-free ( green)
Some reasons for performing the slit lamp exam.
Examine the eye for pathology
Measure intraocular pressure
Checking angles to ensure pt is safe to dilate
Basic slit lamp exam
Turns slit lamp on
Focused oculars with focusing rod
Unlocks slit lamp
Aligns pt with chin rest and temporal canthus mark
Moves up and down using the joy stick
Adjusts light intensity
Adjusted slit beam width (then bring back to narrow beam)
Height (in mm)
Orientation ( horizontal, vertical, diagonal)
Magnification
Filters( red free(green) cobalt blue, diffuse white
Slit beam to 60 degrees
Pulls slit lamp to the left and locks it
Turn off slit lamp
Basic slit lamp used for
Contact lens fitting
Measuring
Retinal exam
Filters
White - for basic exam
Cobalt blue- tonometry, TBUT and evaluating surface irregularities with fluorescein
Angles and positions the slit lamp should be at when examining the angles
60 degrees positioned at the far edge of the cornea nasally and temporally
Van herick
-space between the beam needs to be at least 1/4 the corneal thickness
*VH4= same size or greater
VH3=1/2
VH2=1/4
VH1= less than 1/4
VH1 &2 check with docs
