Slides Pt3 Flashcards
What if one species becomes extinct in a web
The whole web MAY be affected OR another species may fill the niche.
Ecological pyramids
The amount of energy or matter in an eco system can be represented by a pyramid
An ecological pyramid is a diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web
- Energy
- Biomass
- Numbers
Why are food chains so short
There is a limited amount of energy stored from the sun. Organisms high on the food chain risk starvation if food supplies run out.
Interconnected- Man’s Impact
depletion of food destruction of habitats natural disaster clean up pollution population increase Urbanization Pesticides Domestication of animals farming
HUMAN IMPACT
As our population continues to grow we compete with other species for essentials like
space
food
Water
… but do we really “compete?”
Keystone species:
Species that have a dramatic effect on the structure of a food web.
Biogeochemical Cycles
Biogeochemicals include substances that are recycled through the ground (above and below) and the atmosphere
The four we will be concentrating on are:
Water
Nitrogen
Carbon
And the flow of energy
Water Cycle (Rap)
Precipitation
Condensed water vapor that falls to the Earth’s surface.
Runoff
The variety of ways by which water moves across the land.
Infiltration/Percolation
The flow of water from the ground surface into the ground.
Evaporation
The transformation of water from liquid to gas phases as it moves from the ground or bodies of water into the overlying atmosphere
**Transpiration- Evaporation of water from plant leaves. Water leaves through the stomata. **
Condensation
The transformation of water vapor to liquid water droplets in the air, producing clouds and fog.
Carbon Cycle (song)
Decomposition/deposition
Burning fossil fuels
respiration
Photosynthesis
Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen fixation by bacteria
Human Impact- fertilizers
Energy Cycle
Photosynthesis
Cellular Respiration
Chemosynthesis
ATP
Plankton
Zooplankton- small ocean animal organism
Phytoplankton- small ocean plant organism
Phytoplankton → zooplankton
