Slides - Ch. 4 Flashcards
Active Listening- when nurse does not interrupt and listens to the patient along with using body posture to lean forward
Jargon- commonplace language or terminology that is unique to a certain work setting like a hospital or in nursing practice. Can be misinterpreted if used when talking to patients
Use of open-ended questions promotes communication rather than using questions that require a yes or no answer
Use of closed questions just result in a yes or not answer that does not foster communication
Remember patients who are unresponsive can probably still hear you.
Assertive communication:
-Takes into account feelings and needs of patient, and honors nurse’s rights- nurse’s have to set boundaries with their time
-Interactions are even-sided
Aggressive communication:
-Basically acting mean and saying “ I will only medicate you every 4 hours” for example
Establishes trust and a positive nurse-patient relationship
Acceptance- when nurse asks questions but does not judge the patient as in a situation when the patient uses illegal drugs
Be professional when you have to get in a patient’s personal space.
Open Posture- Not crossing arms, legs. Open to communication with body language to show non threatening behavior
